Jack Ryan – Raglan Road

Since the mid-19th century, the Ryans have been a whiskey family, the generations moving from barley growing and distillery management in Munster, to the legendary Dublin vintner’s trade and on to the marrying of malt and barrel to finish the finest of Irish single malt, starting in 1913 with “Ryan’s Malt” in our string of Dublin pubs including the Beggars Bush (still in the family).’

The Jack Ryan Whiskey Company presents small releases of premium malt, aged, matured and finished in our own stock of select barrels. Jack Ryan whiskey finishes range from classic to innovative, and include collaborations with small, quality spirit producers.’

Following on from their Gold Medal at the recent Irish Whiskey Awards 2021 for the Haddington Road 11 year-old Single Malt comes the latest offering from Jack Ryan in collaboration with Brehon Brewhouse.

Raglan Road is a 5 year-old Single Malt, triple-distilled, aged and matured in bourbon and madeira & finished in Imperial Stout with a 54.9% ABV. Available now from selected retailers with an allocation of 3,500 bottles.

My Tasting Notes:

Nose: Coffee & sweet toffee off the bat with a wisp of dark stout notes and slight orange peel showing through.

Palate: Spice in the background with a dark hops stout mouthfeel and cocoa powder with warm faint lemon spice lingering.

Finish: Medium to long with faint spice, dark cocoa powder/chocolate becomes prominent on the second sip. Stout notes and toffee fade on a warm finish.

Huge thanks to Eunan Ryan for sending me on this sample to try. Really impressed with how the whole thing comes together as it’s sometimes hard to get a whiskey/stout combination right. Very well balanced with big bold flavours showing through and the high ABV takes it up a slight notch. Congrats to all involved on a tasty drop!

Sláinte.
